Today, some big brands like Samsung, Huawei, and Xiaomi are trying to produce foldable smartphones for the global market, but now, LG has a brilliant idea to develop stretchable displays. LG introduced the 12” panel that can be stretched to 14” and released back to 12” without damaging it.
LG calls this technology a “free-form” display. This technology adopts from clothing and furniture as it can easily conform to complex shapes, and the ability to stretch will make it more comfortable to wear.
LG Display is trying to produce fashion, wearables, mobility and gaming”. The display has a high quality as far as prototype panels go. It has a 100ppi, similar to a 40” 4K TV. Of course, the company made the display with full-colour RGB capabilities. The display has a silicon substrate which is similar to contact lens material. The display uses micro-LEDs, and it is connected to S-shaped, which can stretch 20% without breaking.
As you may know, Royole company developed the stretchable display last year. It has a 120ppi and can be stretched 30% without breaking the display, but the demo unit was a small 2.7” panel with 96 x 60px resolution. Meanwhile, Samsung demoed a stretchable display in 2017, but this stretchable display only supports hard down on the flexible display rather than stretch to a larger size.
